Spreadsheets

I really enjoyed creating this presentation, not only from the way I did it in PowerPoint, which is a package I like to use.  I always thought that spreadsheets were a bit boring but this opened my eyes to what they can really do.

Previously, I knew that spreadsheets could add, subtract, multiply and divide but I thought that was about it with maybe a few more things added on.  I didn’t realise that they can make jobs so many times quicker.

Also, I had no idea about pivot tables and the way that information can be manipulated to give the answer to a question.  I think I would have taken them more seriously if I knew that before.

The presentation also describes how using all this improves productivity, accuracy and usability of data. It gives you a detailed description of how to use:
  • Hyperlinks
  • Various formulas in spreadsheet (sum, count if, count)
  • How a V Look up table functions
  • Absolute referencing
  • How charts and graphs functions improving accuracy or productivity of data.
  • Pivot table fields
I also liked the way that this unit develops in a similar way to the others.  First of all we looked in to the tools and techniques used in a spreadsheet.

We then went on to develop a solution to the scenario we were given which was an event booking system.  This involved mapping out and planning the solution before we went in to it, so that we knew what we wanted to achieve before we went in to Excel.

This part of the course also taught me that when something is over it isn’t over.  You have to test it and get feedback from others too.  Finally, evaluating your finished product is really important because it enable you to really think about what you have done and how you could make it work better next time. This is a valuable skill to have in the workplace.

LEARNING AIMS IN BRIEF

In this unit I learned how to:

  • understand the uses of spreadsheets and the features available in spreadsheet software packages
  • design a spreadsheet
  • develop and test a spreadsheet
  • review the finished spreadsheet.
